One of the most difficult things about learning to say “no” to opportunities that are presented to you, I’ve learned, is that it can take months for the benefits of this effort to pay off. This period of lag is characterised by the disappointment/guilt/FOMO associated with turning down an invitation to an exciting event/course/meeting or letting yet another call for abstracts go by, while still dealing with the level of busy-ness that was so unsustainable that you felt like you had to start saying “no” to things in the first place.
